Why is Mount Rushmore important?

One the most prominent tourist spots in the United States can be found in Black Hills, South Dakota. One can never really miss it because of its size and how it was made. I guess you already know what I’m talking about. I’m pertaining to Mount Rushmore and the carved faces of the former U.S presidents namely George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

Just looking on how meticulously this memorial was made will surely make a person wonder on how they did it. The person behind this amazing carved masterpiece is the famous sculptor Gutzon Borglum while the person behind this awesome idea is a state historian of South Dakota named Doane Robinson. In 1923, he conceptualized the idea of using carved images of prominent people on the mountain to help boost the tourism industry of Black Hills in South Dakota. This idea was later on approved by congress and thus the project began. Based on American history, this monument took almost 15 years to complete.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is considered as something important because aside from displaying the faces of United States’ most beloved presidents, it was done with great sculpting skills, unique architecture and a lot of effort and it also represents 150 years of American History. According to the sculptor Gutzon Borglum itself, The pupose of the memorial is to communicate the founding, expansion, preservation and unification of the United States with the colossal statues of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt”. Each person is represented in their role in the development and preservation of their country. Starting with Washington who brought democracy to the US, Thomas Jefferson who thought of having a government owned by the people, Abraham Lincoln who became famous because he ended slavery in the US and Theodore Roosevelt who brought reforms in the business industry.

Today, this famous monument has catered to almost 3 million visitors every year from across the country and across the globe. People have been coming here to enjoy the scenery and marvel at the beauty of Black Hills, South Dakota while learning about the history of the United States. For decades, Mount Rushmore has become a symbol of hope and freedom and unity of all people from various race and culture.
