Why is Veteran’s day on November 11?

Veterans Day is considered as the day in which the military veterans are honored in United States. It is a federal holiday observed on 11th of November. November 11th is also remembered by the whole world as Armistice Day. Ã’šÃ‚ The president of US Woodrow Wilson first officially announced Armistice Day as November 11th in 1919. He declared this day in the memory of those who exhibited heroism and died for their country as well as a mark of gratitude for those veterans. By declaring November 11th as Armistice Day, the president said that it has given the Americans an opportunity to show sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations. In 1926, the congress of United States requested the president to make the Americans to celebrate the Day with certain events. From 1938, 11th November was declared annually as a legal holiday according to the Act ’52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a, which was approved on this day.

The World War I ceased after the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, on 28th June. This happened inside the Versailles palace, outside Versailles town in France. The actual war was stopped seven months back itself when the stopping of resentment or armistice between Germany and Allied nations occurred. This started its effect in 11th Hour of 11th day of 11th month. Hence, November 11th 1918 was considered as the termination of the war that has ended all the wars.

The Veteran’s Day was primarily announced by President Wilson in 1919 in the remembrance of armistice. The celebration on this day will occur with parades and meetings with cessation of business for sometime starting from 11 AM. The United States congress recognized the cessation of World War I on 4th of June, 1926. The day of November 11th 1918 was honored, as the most dreadful war was stopped and a peaceful relation between United States and other nations was established.
