Why should Quebec not separate from CanadaQuebec has been fighting for its independence from Canada for many years and the primary reason for this is cultural differences. In a way, Quebec has been surviving like an independent country. Quebec uses one language which is French. They practice French culture as compared to Western parts of Canada that are greatly inspired by British traditions. They desire to eat French food more than any other. And, the French Canadian natives even call themselves quebeckers†instead of Canadians. Because of these, sovereignist†and separatist†groups from Quebec sees that in order to protect its unique society and French customs, Quebec has to be separated from Canada. However, not all Quebeckers have the same thinking like the separatist†or sovereignist†group does which is why previous attempts have been failed. There are many reasons why Quebec should not be separated from Canada. First of all, not all residents of Quebec support the campaign for self-government. Native inhabitants like Innu, Cree, and, Inuit although living in Quebec, still wishes to remain a citizen of Canada. A unilateral declaration of independence will be unjust and undemocratic for the minority groups, as well as the immigrants, if the campaign pushes through.Although French is the sole official language in Quebec, it is also spoken in other parts of Canada like New Brunswick which is a bi-lingual province, Manitoba, Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan. Since French is not exclusively spoken in Quebec, it is too weak to be used as a legal ground by the separation movement. In addition, Canada is a multicultural nation which makes it more unique. If people from other races, culture, and beliefs can live peacefully with one another in other provinces of Canada, so why can’t in Quebec?Quebec flourished socially and economically as a part of Canada. In the same way, Canada became a greener pasture†for immigrants because of Quebec and its other provinces as a whole nation. Separation is not always an answer for differences. One needs to accept and respect others in order to be successful and prosperous.
