Why is Nitrogen Fixation necessary?
Nitrogen fixation is a process which converts nitrogen in the atmosphere into ammonia. The process of nitrogen fixation is essential for living organisms as the nitrogen that is fixed is utilized for the synthesis of macromolecules like protein, DNA and RNA. Nitrogen fixation is used by prokaryotes like anaerobic bacteria, actinobacteria and other bacteria. The nitrogen fixing microorganisms are called diazotrophs. Some animals and higher plants are associated with diazotrophs. Abiotic processes also result in nitrogen fixation. Nitrogen is required by the living beings on the earth. They cannot make use of it in the form of N2. So, it is necessary for the nitrogen to be fixed before it is utilized by the living organisms.
