Music is more than just learning music
Plato wrote in his treatise that music is a more influential instrument than any other for education. Recent research concluded that music is using both sides of the brain, a fact that makes music valuable in all areas of development. The child’s brain is affected by music ‘“ academically, aesthetically, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
What music education entails:
The study is associated with the teaching and learning of music, it touches on the development of the affective human domain; including music appreciation and sensitivity. Literacy preparation is enhanced by music participation. It does not matter if children are listening to tones; playing instruments or singing songs, they are provided with the unique opportunity to hear and listen in innovative ways that practices aural discrimination.
Why music education is is important?
1. It aids in language development
Recent studies conducted by the Children’s Music Workshop, clearly indicated that musical training develops physically the left side of the brain that was known with processing language. It can actually wire the circuit of the brain to work well in the development of language.
2. It increases the IQ
A study of children’s IQ was made in the University of Toronto showed an increased in the IQ’s of 6 years-old kids who were given 9 months of training in piano and voice. The IQ’s of the children was tested before they entered the first grade, then again before entering the second grade. Surprisingly, children who were given music lessons over the school year had increased an average three points in their IQ compared to the other groups who were not given music lessons.
3. It encourages the brain to work harder
Two studies conducted Psychology Department of Boston College and the Harvard Medical School discovered vast changes in the brain images of children who underwent 15 months of weekly music instruction and practice. The brain imaging showed changes to the networks in the brain associated with those abilities and their brains tend to work harder.
4. It enhanced spatial-temporal skills
Research found a causal link between music and spatial intelligence. It follows that that children who understand music can visualize various elements that should go together, like solving a math problem. These skills come into play as solving a real-life- problems involved in multistep mental activities. This is especially applicable in the areas of architecture, art, engineering, gaming, math, and especially working with computers.
5. It improved test scores
A study published in 2007 by the University of Kansas revealed that students given superior music education programs in elementary schools scored around 22% higher in English and 20% higher in math during standardized tests in comparison to schools with low-quality music programs. This did not consider socioeconomic disparities among the schools. School districts that concentrated well on music training perform well on standardized tests.
Universality of Music
The primary reason for providing music lessons to kids is the universality of its effects. As the recent study from the University of California concluded found that it improves the academic side of the period ‘“ it included the facility of thinking.
Music is physical; it is like a sport as singing and rhythm develop coordination. A healthy body is the effect of using the power of air and wind to blow an oboe, flute, harmonica or saxophone.
Music as an art form is emotional. Every child uses music as an artistic and emotional outlet. Music is the best option for the young to express their feelings and emotions.
Music is life ‘“ people in their twilight years can no longer play strenuous sports like soccer or football. But a 70-80-year-old individual can still sing and play musical instruments. Music has no age limit. Music is a gift that last for a lifetime.
Through music education, all these benefits are possible. Music education is something important to rave about!
