Why is BP responsible for the Oil Spill?
Along with BP (british petroleum) there were other companies also working on the deep water horizon oil rig during its explosion on April 20th 2010. The representatives of other companies like Transocean Ltd., Halliburton Co., Weatherford International Ltd., and M-I SWACO. This explosion has led to the death of eleven crew members and the oil spill all over the Gulf. The BP being one of the big oil companies accepted its fault in the drastic Gulf oil spill. BP was ready to pay the compensation for the sufferers on the shore as well as for the cleaning purposes.
The oil pollution act of 1990 has pointed the whole responsibility of the oil spill to the BP Company. But the other companies like Transocean and Halliburton were also asked for compensation along with BP considering their part in the oil spill. The reason probably for naming BP as a sole responsible company is for the sake of simplicity. The criminal investigation authorities say that internally companies other than BP who are involved in oil spill will also be sued.
Exxon Valdez oil spill accident took place in 1989. Following this, US congress has announced that the companies who are responsible for the leak during the digging process will have to bear the compensation for the destruction. The responsible companies were also required to pay for the cleaning process. It is said that BP need not hold the sole responsibility for gulf oil spill as it was performing the work carefully. There is an opinion among people that BP and its partners have already lost $75 million priced oil rig. As they are already at a big loss they cannot fill up the destruction costs. It has also been found that if the companies have tried to use latest technology with a little bit of over sight, the disaster would have been prevented. As this could have been taken care by BP which was ignored, BP is held responsible for the Gulf oil spill.
