Why Do Volleyball Players Wear Spandex?

Playing any sport requires vigorous activity. In playing volleyball, the player has to jump, run, spike, and dive for the ball. With these kinds of movements, players need to wear sports attire which is comfortable and elastic. This is the reason why volleyball players wear Spandex.

Spandex is an elastic fiber which is more durable than rubber. It was invented by Joseph Shivers in 1959. Spandex came from the word expands which is also its anagram. The word spandex is popular in America while elastane is the term used by Europeans.

When Spandex was introduced as a clothing material, it brought a lot of changes in the industry of clothes. It became very useful especially to athletes and those who are always on the go.

Playing volleyball becomes easier and safer when Spandex is worn. Wearing this kind of cloth allow the players to move with flexibility. They can travel around the court and go for the ball with inconvenience of fixing their shorts. Spandex also allows the players enough safety especially in the skin. Since volleyball players dive for the ball, there is a tendency to acquire bruises. Spandex protects the skin because it fits perfectly.

By using Spandex, the player doesn’t make the players conscious because they are more confident that what they are wearing is safe and fit. Unlike with shorts, it usually distracts the players especially if the ball has to be dug lower than their waste. It also stays in place so even if the player has to fall, especially the female players, it is assured that the spandex will cover the whole portion of the legs. The player will be less embarrassed because Spandex will get loose unlike with shorts that it will easily fall off especially when the player falls down with her legs up.
